There are two species of gorilla living in the African rainforest: the Eastern Gorilla and the Western Gorilla. The Eastern Gorillas are further divided into two subspecies, the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and Mountain Gorilla, and the Western Gorillas are likewise divided into the Western Lowland Gorilla and the Cross River Gorilla. Of these four subspecies, the Western Lowland is by far the most numerous, with an estimated population between 100,000 and 200,000, while the Eastern Lowland Gorllas number in the thousands, and the two other subspecies in the hundreds. Due to recent rapid declines in population, all are considered endangered.
