Unfortunately, anything placed in municipal waste streams goes to landfills; waste management companies generally cannot screen all of the waste they pick up daily. This amounts to over 400,000,000 tons annually. While recycling efforts have helped to reduce the amount of waste being landfilled, there is still a huge amount of work to be done. Some items that should not go to landfills include: recyclable paper, plastic, glass, metal and cardboard, yard waste, food scraps, electronic waste, and much more. Waste that goes to landfills does not biodegrade generally, and all materials and nutrients sent to landfills are lost.
