From websites I checked out, it appears the diamond probably causes the most environmental destruction. The mercury and cyanide used in mining processes are dumped into the soil and water table, in addition to the scars mining operations leave on the landscape. And though the actual mining process may not be the worst of all the gems, it is the most prevalent gem industry outside of the United States. Other countries do not adhere to the same strict mining regulations and restrictions, and thus their mining operations will be much more environmentally destructive, especially in the poverty-stricken African countries.
Conflict Diamonds, minded in the Western countries of Africa have caused untold environmental devastation. In addition to polluting rivers and streams and strip mining many mountains and valleys, these stones have caused a lot of military violence, which to comes with environmental destruction mainly.
