According to the American Heart Association, of the types of fish most commonly consumed in the US, canned tuna has the highest levels at .12 parts per million (ppm). But of all fish, the highest mercury levels have been found in tilefish, with 1.45 ppm.
Larger, longer living, predatory fish will have the most mercury. Fish store mercury in their muscles, and the longer they live the more they will have stored. Fish that eat other fish will also accumulate more mercury because the fish they are eating will have mercury in them.
