Farmers who produce grains, oilseeds, cotton, sugar, and dairy products receive the most federal subsidies. Farmers who grow vegetables, fruits, nuts, or raise animals for meat receive far fewer subsidies from the government, even though they account for about half of total agriculture production in the United States.
