Several types of chemicals that harm the ozone layer include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), chemicals that contain atoms of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. Chlorofluorocarbons are used in the manufacture of aerosol sprays, as solvents, and as refrigerants. Another chemical that has contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer is hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFCs). HCFCs were also used in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in the past. Methyl bromide, a chemical used as agricultural fumigants, may also have contributed in harming the ozone layer.
