Tar sands development and global climate change. Tar sands development is already polluting the water of northern Canada. This is causing rates of fatal tumors to increase in the local population of humans and wildlife. Tar sands development will increase if the Keystone XL pipeline is completed. This pipeline would not only threaten the north but also watersheds along it’s entire length to Texas. Global climate change has also been increasing pine beetle infestations in the far north. This is causing huge stands of dead timber. This timber is more likely to cause wildfires. There is also the melting of the permafrost in the far north. Melted permafrost means changing ecocystems from the colonization of the tundra by trees and bushes. It also means the extinction of locally adapted arctic species.
