A tributary is a stream that flows into a larger stream, or anything that is a branch of a larger system, flowing into the mainstream, such as capillaries which flow into veins or arteries which flow into larger veins or arteries.
The largest or final channel isn’t a tributary of anything. For example, the Mississippi River has thousands of tributary creeks and rivers, but it is not a tributary itself. It flows only into the Gulf of Mexico.
