What is tragedy of the commons and what does it have to do with the environment?

Tragedy of the commons relates to an article written by Garrett Hardin. It implies that several individuals acting independently of each other destroy a common shared area. This in turn is due to huge population growth. And a solution that Hardin implied was population control and control over common areas. Hardin’s argument in relation to the environment is that over population and our current production of resources can’t sustain the population growth now or expected in the future. That overpopulation in turn destroys our common areas (resources) that we as part of the population know we should protect. Hence creating a dilemma.
