The Hungary toxic spill occurred on October 5, 2010, was red sludge waste from an alumina plant. It killed four people and was declared state of emergency in three of Hungary’s counties. It affected an area of 15 square miles and killed livestock in the area. Hungary is working to contain the damage before it can reach the Danube River and spread further.
