San Francisco not only has the highest recycling rate in California, but also holds the same title for the entire nation. As of May 2009, the city was successfully diverting 72% of all recyclable waste from landfills. The city is definitely on track to meeting its goal of 75% by 2010 and becoming a zero waste city by 2020. Much of this achievement is due to Mayor Newsom’s policies which have made construction debris recycling mandatory.
