According to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s website, Great White Sharks were the top predators of the oceans up until 5 million years ago, at which point they were overtaken by Killer Whales. The whales’ hunting advantages include their size, sharp teeth, speed, and the fact that they hunt in groups. An article on the Discovery News website, however, claims that jellyfish are quickly becoming “the new shark and tuna of the sea.” Jellyfish are capable of eating their entire body weight in crustacean prey. According to the article, the difference in methodology between jellyfish and larger fish is that jellyfish need to search less space to meet their energy needs. They can also “endure months of starvation.”

Orcas are considered to be the top predators of the sea, due to their group hunting style and their individual assets – very sharp teeth, high swimming speed, and markedly high intelligence that is characteristic of the Delphinidae family.
