Thin-film solar cells are used as a cheaper, more efficient alternative to silicon photovoltaic cells for harnessing solar energy.  They are made up of a thin layer of semiconductive material – such as silicon or a copper alloy – that converts sunlight to electricity at a much lower cost than PV cells.
