Tertiary sewage treatment removes non-biodegradeable toxic organic substances such as chlorophenols, polychlorinated biphenyls, and other synthetic substances. Carbon compounds are removed by activated carbon filters, phosphate is removed by precipitation, and nitrogen compounds are removed by volatilisation. The final step is disinfection to eliminate escaped bacteria and viruses by chlorination.
