San Gorgonio Mountain, also known locally as Mount San Gorgonio, or Old Greyback, is the highest peak in Southern California at 11,503 feet. It is in the San Bernardino Mountains, 27 miles east of the city of San Bernardino. It is ranked 7th among peaks in the 48 contiguous states and 18th among over all.

Just to be clear, that ranking of 7th in the 48 states and 18th overall is NOT regarding height, but prominence, a mountain climber’s measure of how isolated and distinct a peak is from others in the vicinity. In terms of height, San Gorgonio would not even be close to the #100 in the US.

Many people might feel that Mt Whitney, being in the south half of the state, would be the correct answer, but of course it depends on what is meant by “southern California.”
