Talc has many uses in powder form. It is mainly used as a cosmetic, mainly to absorb moisture. It is used in baby powder to prevent rashes and diaper irritation. Adults also use it to prevent rashes and chaffing. Keeping the skin dry and smooth helps to prevent irritation and sooth discomfort. Another less common use is to put it between cracks in floorboards to prevent squeaking.
It’s called talcum powder, actually (so called because it is made from the mineral “talc”–magnesium silicate). It’s used mainly as a deodorizer and to prevent diaper rash in infants. It can also be used to absorb moisture in shoes and as a carpet freshener.
