Synthetic fertilizers are chemically-processed raw materials used to fertilize the land.
Synthetic fertilizers are generally composed of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium compounds. They are the most used fertilizers because of their affordable price and effectiveness, but there are concerns that overuse of synthetic fertilizers can damage the environment as a whole. Runoff of fertilizers into water sources has been linked with algae blooms and “dead zones”. However, consumers face little health risk from eating vegetables grown with synthetic fertilizers, except in cases of excessive use of nitrate fertilizers.
