What is sustainable farming and how does it affect the environment?

Sustainable simply means that we are at least breaking even as far as inputs vs outputs. Most conventional farming is not sustainable because it relies heavily on petroleum based products for inputs and the amount of energy put in is less than the amount of energy recovered from the end product. If all farming was sustainable than we would waste a lot less energy and waste a lot less petroleum and a plethora of other resources.
