Surplus value is a Marxist economic concept used to explain his theory on the instability of capitalism. The basic premise is that in a capitalist system, employees are only paid enough not to quit and barely subsist. For Marx, this does not comprise the total worth of the labor. The rest of the value of this labor is called “surplus value.”
