In efforts to minimize our dependence on oil, synthetic oil – artificial lubricant consisting of chemical compound – is looked at more closely. Research efforts at Purdue University are taking a close look at how petroleum oils may be substituted with synthetics generated from agricultural waste, other biomass (plant and organism matter), and coal. Liquid fuel is produced by applying high-pressure steam to the materials. Current research also focuses on minimizing synthetic fuel processing byproducts of carbon dioxide by adding nitrogen into the coal-and-biomass-processing reactor.
