What is a subduction zone?

A subduction zone occurs when two plates converge. Where one plate slides underneath another, being forced down into the Earth’s mantle. They occur where an oceanic plate slides below another oceanic plate or underneath a continental plate. It can be a very active volcanic environment with lots of seismic activity.

Am example is where the western edge of South America touches the Pacific Ocean. Where the heavier material is forced underneath the lighter rock.
