While oak is probably the strongest wood readily available at any lumberyard, the more expensive/rare teak is generally considered the strongest wood. Teak is weather-resistant, repels insects, and is flexible while never becoming brittle. This bend-but-not-break characteristic is why teak is often used on ships and for outdoor furniture and decks.
Iroko, or African Teak, is also a great choice – but is also relatively expensive.
