A main force behind India’s current environmental initiatives is actually its current Minister of the Environment, Jairam Ramesh. His main focus right now is facilitating a cooperative working relationship between India and the U.S. on the issue of global climate change. He has pointed out that India’s main issue is a historical lack of enforcement of the environmental laws already in place. To this end, he has proposed an Indian equivalent to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, citizen-accessible environmental courts, and an ongoing measurement of environmental costs of development called “Green GDP”.
