The regions of the US that tend to produce the most energy from coal include many Northeastern and Midwestern states. Some states in the south, like Texas and Florida, also stand out for their use of coal. The approximately 600 existing coal plants in the US are concentrated in the eastern half of the country, particularly in these key areas. However, every state in the country uses some amount of coal energy; even areas like the Northwest, which has long been heavily dependant on hydro-power for electricity, still generate a large percentage of their energy use with coal power. Wherever you live in this country, you have the opportunity to combat global warming and pollution by lessening your region’s dependence on coal.
