Texas, with 670 million tons emitted annually. Not only does it have industry and a lot of methane-emitting cows, but its citizens use the most energy. One third of the state’s emissions come from transportation: one in four vehicles in Texas (there are 20 million registered) is a pickup truck. Texans use 3,000 more kilowatt-hours of electricity annually than the average citizen. There is huge sprawl and cars are required to get most places. California and Pennsylvania are the next two states that emit the most and Texas emits more than the two combined.
