There are a total of 26 states that produce coal, Wyoming the America’s largest producer, averaging 400 million tons of coal produced each year, which is about 40% of the nation’s coal production total. The next largest are West Virginia and Kentucky.
West Virginia is the largest produce of coal. In 2008, 97 million tons of coal was produced from their underground mines.
The statement that West Virginia is the largest producer of coal is incorrect – Wyoming produces more than twice as much. And the number 97 million for WV is also incorrect, WV produced 158 million tons of coal in 2008, and 137 million tons in 2009.
