Texas is the state that uses the most coal for energy production.  Texas uses 101,840 thousand short tons of coal for electric or gas production per year.  Due to Texas size, large population, and heavy industry sectors, the energy use make sense in regards to scale, due to the much larger energy demand compared to a state like Illinois.
