The Gulf of Mexico has by far the most offshore oil rig platforms in the US, which would include states like Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. One count puts all “active and removed” rigs at 6,659, with 819 “still fully manned.” Compare that to just 27 on California’s coast.
According to an article on CBSnews.com there are 3500 drilling rigs and platforms. Take a peek at the two images attached below as URLs to get a sense of the comparison between the oil rigs in the Gulf and those off the coast of California.
A report I downloaded from RigData.com shows Texas as having the greatest number of oil rigs – but it doesn’t differentiate on/offshore rig types.
