Iowa has produced the largest corn crop of any state for each of the past 14 years. In an average year, Iowa produces more corn than most whole countries. For example, Iowa grows three times as much corn as a country like Argentina.
No other state produces more corn than Iowa. In 2007, Iowa farmers harvested more than 2.5 billion bushels, with one bushel equalling 56 pounds, this is more than most whole countries produce in a year. Ethanol can be made from corn, and one bushel of corn is capable of producing 2.7 gallons of ethanol, so it’s no surprise that Iowa is also the leader in the ethanol industry.
