The sate of Washington has been hit hard by the bark beetle. They are at their worst when they come in waves, sometimes reaching epidemic levels. 5.6 million cubic feet of trees were lost in Washington in 1991.
More recently, the bark beetle has ravaged the Southwestern United States, primarily Arizona and New Mexico. The two states lost more than 3 million acres combined between 2002 and 2004.
