The extent to which this is because of a phasing out of coal plants versus a downturn in the economy is tough to say, but there are 6 states that cut their power generation from coal in half between June 2008 and June 2009. Those states are Washington (-91.7%), Maine (-91.2%), Connecticut (-66.5%), Delaware (-64.7%), New Jersey (-55.3%), and Oregon (-52.2%). As a region, the contiguous Pacific region had the best decrease (-47.4%).
