As of 2006, Mississippi throws away (landfills) 98.4% of their waste. However, they also do not make as much waste in general as many of the larger states do. They lead in percentage landfilled, though.
California produces the most waste, but they landfill just about half of it (about 42,845,000 tons), which, by percentage, is less than most states. Still, due to the state’s massive size, they throw away the most purely by volume. Texas comes in at second. It produces around 45,898,387 tons of waste annually, and landfills 79.6% of it (36,535,116.052 tons).
