Russia went through hundreds (well over 600) fires in the summer of 2010. Costing the country immense amounts of money and claiming the lives of 50,000 plus people these fires were the worst in the history of Russia. They were caused primarily from extreme drought and the highest recorded temperatures for the country. Some of the blame also fell on the shoulders of certain officials due to disciplinary infringement. While not much could be done to avoid or tame these fires, many believe there was a strong degree of man-made chaos involved. As a result, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev fired (no pun intended) these officers without hesitation.
