What standards does a home-built car have to meet to be considered street legal?

The short answer is that it is going to depend on your state.  You can find some information here at the first link below — which will link you to a page of links.

A home-built car would have to use the necessary Department of Transportation approved windshield, headlights, signals, brakes and brake-lights, etc.  In addition one would have to secure insurance and registration for said vehicle.  Some “Internet Wisdom” out there suggests registering your car as a “special creation” vehicle.  My guess is that you’ll have to do quite a bit of research in your area to find out what the exact needs/requirements are.

It’s probably going to be worthwhile to research kitcars as well, since kitcars can fall into some of the same categories/suffer some of the same challenges.
