While many factors, including size and age of the bitch (female dog), as well as the physical shape of her uterus, can determine litter size, larger breeds tend to yield the most puppies in a given litter. In a recent study by the Royal Canin, Labrador Retrievers yielded the largest litters, out of 15 breeds that were tested, at an average of 7-8 puppies per litter. Midsize breeds generally yielded 3-6 pups, while smaller breeds yielded 2-4, on average.
