I suspect that it will be a combination of wind and solar that makes us ultimately free of dependence on oil. Neither source is entirely reliable and stable (the sun doesn’t shine always and the wind doesn’t blow always, but together it’s a pretty consistent bet).
Solar energy will probably be the leading renewable energy source in the future. The panels are becoming easier to make which makes the cost of each panel cheaper so in turn makes it cheaper for the consumer. Yes the sun doesn’t shine all the time, but that is why they are developing bigger and stronger capacities to store the energy for future use. Right now you can store energy in your home for future use through batteries. But now they are developing larger storing capacities for industrial use and for individuals to store more!
