In 1984 the Walt Disney company purchased a collection of African art objects from Paul and Ruth Tishman. The Tishmans began their collection in 1959 of objects from primarily west and central Africa, with the original goal of representing all the major art traditions. In 2005 Disney gave all 525 objects to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art. And though I couldn’t find any mention of the specific art he personally collected, he was a major supporter of the California Institute of Art near Los Angeles.
