What is a solar tsunami?

Solar tsunamis are giant waves of molten plasma that astronomers have observed moving quickly over the surface of the sun.  These waves can be created by sun spot explosions, and at least one observed solar tsunami was taller than the diameter of the Earth.  Though scientists have been aware of solar tsunamis for many years, it is only recently that astronomers have confirmed the waves are in fact real, and not a type of optical illusion.  Fortunately, though they would be pretty terrifying up close, tsunamis on the sun’s surface pose no threat to the Earth or its inhabitants.
