According to whineawhile.com the Sumarians and Egyptians are credited with inventing grain fermentation over 5000 years ago.
There is a pretty cool brewing company called Dog Fish Head that makes a beer called Midas Touch which was developed from analyzing drinking vessels found in the tomb of King Midas. If you are old enough and are curious as to how beer may have tasted 2700 years ago see if you can find a bottle in your local store or pub.
