The modern soccer ball is made of 32 panels of waterproofed leather or plastic.

This year’s World Cup ball, the Jabulani (manufactured by adidas) is made of 100% polyurethene. It received FIFA’s highest rating, but its quality has been raised as a potential explanation for the poor crosses and shots from distance hit in South Africa.
