A Smart Grid is an electricity delivery network in which energy is distributed to consumers through two methods: transmission and distribution. There’s a lot of technical language that I admit is a little over my head, however from my understanding a Smart Grid requires a communications hub. The SmartSynch GridRouter is a communication system (hub) that allows for remote control of appliances and electronics. The GridRouter essentially allows a person access to their electronics and/or appliances through a mobile device–theoretically one could power off their lights from outside of the home. The only aspect I cannot put a definite answer on is whether or not the utility provider has similar access to a consumer’s electronics/appliances.
