Currently, a smart clothes dryer could be any clothes dryer with the water sensor technology. These dryers can sense when clothes are dry and turn themselves off, saving electricity. Whirlpool is developing smart clothes dryers that work on a grid. This grid tells the dryer when electricity is at its peak and most expensive, during that time the dryer will go in to power save mode. These dryers are expected to save the equivalent of six coal plants.
