The toyon, or Christmas berry, is probably the smallest type of apple. It’s scientific name is Heteromeles Arbutifolia. These members of the apple family, the family Rosacea, is more similar to a berry. They are often smaller than a penny.
I will give you the four smallest types of apples, because there is no official record as to which will produce the smallest apple. The crabapple, lady apples (including The Pink Lady), Dwarf apples, and hybridized apples, such as grapples (grapes+ apple) are all very small in size, but different in taste! There are also growing practices called dwarfing and making hybrid grafts which can produce very tiny fruit.
