Probably the crabapple would be considered the smallest apple variety. Often crabapples are too tart to eat, though some of them are still quite yummy eaten raw, and make great jelly.
There a few contenders for that title. However, growing techniques (like dwarfing and hybrids) can create very small fruits from trees. So it makes it hard to pick one out from the rest. However, Heteromeles Arbutifolia is one that is often claimed to be the smallest apple. It actually grows on a shrub! It’s often known as the Christmas Berry actually and usually smaller than a penny!!!!
