    There is some debate over what the smallest organism is. Viruses, which have components of life like DNA or RNA, could take the title, but they are considered nonliving by most scientists. Nanoarchaeum equitans is the smallest organism that is unquestionably living, a microbe only 400 nanometers in diameter.
