Most people are unaware that oranges are a hybrid plant. Technically, the orange is considered a berry because they derive from a single ovary and have many seeds. The name comes from the Sanskrit word “Narange” (if you know Spanish, you will recognize the Spanish word immediately: Naranja).
There are many varieties of oranges, some natural and some hybrid. Though some claim the Kumquat is the smallest orange, it was briefly classified in a different genus than citrus. It has recently been reclassified as citrus.
Mandarins, Tangerines, and Clementines (seedless Mandarins) are all small, and the Clementine seems to be the smallest of the oranges not counting a kumquat, which is usually considered not an orange.
