The smallest type of sunfish is the Orangespotted Sunfish, also known as the redspotted sunfish, the dwarf fish, a pigmy fish or a sunperch. This sunfish is small and can be found throughout Iowa, especially in man-made lakes, natural lakes and interior streams. By the end of their second year the Orangespotted Sunfish grows to about 2 inches, their growth continues at a rate of about one inch per year for the first four years of its life. Orangespotted sunfFish longer than four inches are very rare.
