“The smallest island in the world – according to the Guinness Book of Records – is Bishop Rock. It lies at the most south-westerly part of the United Kingdom. It is one of 1040 islands around Britain and only has a lighthouse on it.”

The smallest island is said to be Bishop’s Rock off the southwest England, but it is very difficult to be sure.  The smallest island nation, however, is Nauru.  The island is 8.2 square miles.

Bishop Rock contains room for nothing more than the uninhabited 49 meter tall lighthouse. The rock acts as a barrier between Great Britain and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a small rock at the westermost tip of the Isles of Scilly. The British government set out the parameters for classifying an island in 1861 and somehow Bishop Rock passed the test. It was decided that if it was inhabited, the size was immaterial. If it was uninhabited however, it had to be “the summer’s pasturage of at least one sheep” which is about two acres. File:Bishop Rock Lighthouse - Isles of Scilly.jpg
