The smallest Hawaiian island is the island of Kahoolawe. It is uninhabited and covers only 45 square miles. The smallest inhabited island, Lanai, covers 140 square miles.
Kahoolawe is the smallest of the Hawaiian islands. It is only 12 miles long and deserted. To.Hawaii.com says Kahoolawe was used to house prisoners similar to Alcatraz off the coast of California. In 1994 the island was legally made a part of the state of Hawaii. No one can access Kahoolawe without a special permit since it is being restored and cleaned by the military.
