The Inaccessible Island Rail is the smallest, flightless bird alive today, growning to about 17 cm. It is found only on a small island off the Tristan de Cunha archipelago. It is currently classified as Vulnerable due to its limited habitat.
The smallest flightless bird is the Inaccessible Island Rail, from the island Inaccessible in the South Atlantic, to the southwest of Africa. It weighs less than an ounce and is only 17 cm long. It is of the family Ralidae and features a red eye among brown and grey body. As long as no predators colonize the island (there is worry of rats coming from ships), the population should remain stable, but due to their isolated location they are vulnerable to change.
